The Unijos Staff Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited (UJSCSL) has been applauded for aligning its Bye-laws with current realities to ensure sustainable development and protect members’ interests. The commendation came from the Registrar of the University of Jos, Dr. Rejoice James Songden, during an Emergency General Meeting held at the Faculty of Management Sciences on Friday.

Dr. Songden praised the amendments, stating that the reforms would enhance members’ confidence in the Society. She recommended that non-regular staff—including those on sabbatical, part-time, contract, and visiting appointments—be excluded from cooperative activities, citing disciplinary limitations under the university’s laws. She further recommended commendation letters for members of the Bye-laws Amendment Committee.
UJSCSL President, Ramson Lohfa, reiterated the Society’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and prudent financial management. He revealed ongoing efforts to recover outstanding loans, warning that salary deductions will be enforced for debts from as far back as three years. Members were urged to seek clarification from the Secretariat instead of voicing concerns on social media.

The highlight of the meeting was the presentation of the Amendment Committee’s report by Dr. Rabiatu Abdullahi on behalf of Chairman Professor Morgan Piwuna. Key amendments included:
Reduction of withdrawal interest from 10% to 2%.
Increase in death and severance benefits from N300 to N500.
New election eligibility: minimum N500,000 savings and 100,000 shares.
Reintroduction of the Board of Trustees (BOT).
Revised surplus distribution: 60% to members, 7% EXCO, 3% Committee/BOT, 25% general reserve, 5% education.
Extension of EXCO tenure from 2 to 3 years.
New financial year set from January 1 to December 31.
Soft loan cap raised to N150,000; emergency loans to N100,000.
These changes aim to foster stronger governance, financial discipline, and inclusive growth in the Society.
