Jos, Plateau State – August 2, 2025
Tensions have flared within the Igbo Community Association (ICA) Jos, following an incident that unfolded during the recent condolence visit of Plateau State Governor, His Excellency Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, to one of the foremost Igbo stakeholders in the state, Amb. Chief Dr. Nelson Uba Mkparu, after the loss of his beloved wife, Mrs. Josephine Ifeoma Mkparu.
The visit, intended to be a solemn expression of unity and compassion, was overshadowed by a disgraceful display of misconduct by two ICA political aspirants: Mr. Chidi Onah, a contender for the office of President General, and Mr. Ralph Ogbodo, vying for the position of 3rd Vice President General of the Association.
According to eyewitnesses, the disruption began while the President General of ICA, Chief Mike Okunonke, JP, was delivering the vote of thanks. In an unexpected outburst, Mr. Ralph Ogbodo loudly interrupted and insulted the President General in the presence of the Governor and other dignitaries. The confrontation shocked attendees, particularly given the solemn context of the event.
Matters escalated further when Mr. Ogbodo and Mr. Onah reportedly attempted to approach the Governor’s official vehicle — a move that left many stunned and confused. Sources confirm that it took the swift intervention of the Governor’s security and protocol team to prevent them.
In response to the controversy, a group known as the Concerned Igbo Patriots on Saturday 2nd August 2025 issued an unsigned statement in Jos condemning the actions of the two aspirants. The group called on both men to issue public apologies to the Igbo Community Association and to the wider Igbo populace in Plateau State for bringing disrepute to the organization.
“It is in the spirit of peace, orderliness, and communal respect that we urge Mr. Chidi Onah and Mr. Ralph Ogbodo to tender an unreserved apology,” the statement read. “The behaviour they displayed is not in line with Igbo culture or the values we expect from those who aspire to lead.”
The group also commended Governor Caleb Mutfwang for his continuous support for the Igbo community in Plateau State, noting his presence at the funeral as a testament to his genuine compassion and solidarity. The Governor had also previously extended support during the passing of Igwe Chief Basil Udeaja III, further cementing his reputation as an inclusive and people-focused leader.
“No governor in the history of Plateau State has shown such open-hearted kindness and sustained support to the Igbo community,” the statement added. “We deeply appreciate His Excellency’s gesture and reaffirm our commitment to upholding the dignity of our people.”
As the ICA prepares for its upcoming internal elections, the association now faces growing pressure to address the fallout from the incident and ensure that standards of conduct are strictly enforced, particularly among those who seek leadership positions.
The incident has ignited a wider conversation on political maturity, respect for traditional values, and the importance of unity in times of collective grief.
