Group Urges Calm Over Purported “Sarkin Yakin Jos” Title

A Civic advocacy group by the name “One Plateau, One Voice” has called on residents of Plateau State to remain calm, vigilant, and respectful of constituted traditional institutions following the circulation of a purported invitation announcing the conferment of the title “Sarkin Yakin Jos” on a former public office holder. In a press statement signed by its Convener, Dogo Nanzing, and dated July 27, 2026, the organization expressed concern that the invitation, reportedly issued by a group identifying itself as the Forum for Concerned Jos Community Elders & Stakeholders, could create confusion over matters it says fall within the authority of recognized traditional institutions.

The statement noted that while citizens have the constitutional right to freely associate and honor deserving individuals, any claim relating to traditional titles with historical and cultural significance should originate from, or be expressly endorsed by, the appropriate traditional institution vested with the customary authority to do so. The group noted that Plateau State has made significant progress in promoting peace through the collective efforts of government, traditional rulers, religious leaders, security agencies, and community stakeholders.

It cautioned that actions capable of generating suspicion or reviving historical sensitivities should be avoided in the interest of preserving the state’s fragile peace. One Plateau, One Voice further alleged that recent developments reflect attempts by some individuals and groups to advance narratives that could undermine peaceful coexistence. It urged residents to disregard what it described as unauthorized claims that could distort the authority of recognized traditional institutions or politicize Plateau’s cultural heritage.

The organization also appealed to citizens to remain law-abiding, cooperate with security agencies, and report any suspicious activities or public gatherings they believe could threaten public peace. It further called on the Plateau State Government, relevant traditional councils, and security agencies to monitor the situation closely, provide clarification where necessary, and safeguard public confidence in established traditional institutions.Concluding the statement, Nanzing reaffirmed the group’s commitment to peace, justice, mutual respect, and unity, urging all Plateau residents to continue working together in the interest of harmonious coexistence.
