Shettima, Jonathan, Mutfwang & APC Boss Yilwatda Hail Jonah Jang at 80, Unveil Autobiography as Son Gets Tinubu Appointment

In a rare display of bipartisan unity, Vice President Kashim Shettima, former President Goodluck Jonathan, Plateau Governor Caleb Mutfwang and APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda gathered in Jos on Saturday to celebrate former Governor and Senator Jonah David Jang as he turned 80 and unveiled his autobiography, “Airman to Politics: My Life”. The high-profile event at the Tamarald Event Centre drew traditional rulers, clergy, diplomats and leaders from across party lines. Speakers described Jang as an elder statesman defined by sacrifice, courage, faith and an unwavering commitment to peace and national unity.

Vice President Shettima praised Jang for consistently choosing reconciliation over conflict and challenged Plateau’s elite to unite and unlock the state’s agricultural, tourism and economic potential. “With the right mix of leadership, innovation and unity, Plateau can become a model of national cohesion and prosperity,” he said. In a surprise announcement that drew loud applause, Shettima revealed that President Bola Tinubu had appointed Jang’s son, Hon. Yakubu David Jang, as Senior Special Assistant in the Office of the President.

Former President Jonathan called the autobiography “an important contribution to Nigeria’s political history” and recalled Jang as a dependable ally who remained “positively stubborn” whenever Plateau’s interest was at stake.

Governor Mutfwang described Jang as a father, mentor and role model whose private counsel in 2016 shaped his own philosophy of governance. He highlighted the New Government House in Little Rayfield as part of Jang’s enduring legacy and called for national recognition of Jang and the late Solomon Lar for their roles in the democratic struggle.

APC Chairman Yilwatda hailed Jang as a towering figure of integrity and deep faith, while the celebrant himself gave glory to God, stressing that character, faith and service outlive power, wealth and fame.

Renowned broadcaster Seun Okinbaloye, who reviewed the book, described it as “a man’s argument with history” — a candid journey from a boy in Du to air force officer, governor, senator and elder statesman. The occasion closed on a note of celebration, gratitude and renewed calls for peace in Plateau and beyond.
