A coalition of Kano State activists has formally called on former governor and senator, Ibrahim Shekarau, to contest for the Kano Central senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
The appeal was contained in a statement issued on April 29–30 and signed by the National Convener of the group, Usman Saidu.
According to Saidu, the call reflects growing pressure from youths and grassroots stakeholders who believe Shekarau possesses the leadership experience needed to reposition Kano Central.
“We gathered here to make a solemn and patriotic declaration—a declaration not only of hope, but of urgency to rescue Kano Central from uncertainty, division, and stagnation,” the statement read.
The coalition said its decision was not driven by sentiment but by Shekarau’s track record in governance, particularly in youth development, education, and peacebuilding.
Saidu described the former governor as “a statesman of uncommon humility” and “a symbol of democratic stability,” adding that his reputation continues to resonate among voters at the grassroots level.
The group also called on civil society organisations, youth groups, and students across Kano State to support what it described as a “historic movement.”
“We are confident that delivering Mallam Shekarau is achievable given his track record and credibility, which have endeared him to the people,” Saidu stated.
The coalition concluded by urging Shekarau to “heed the call of history” and present himself for the 2027 elections, assuring him of widespread support from constituents in Kano Central.
