The Plateau State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability in the operations of Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs), following public concerns over their conduct in Jos.

The assurance was given by the Commissioner for Transport, Davou Gyang Jatau, shortly after he decorated the newly appointed Director of Vehicle Inspection (DVI), Jonathan Zam, during a brief ceremony held at the Ministry of Works Conference Hall, JD Gomwalk Secretariat.

Jatau said the move forms part of ongoing reforms by the administration of Caleb Mutfwang aimed at addressing complaints and restoring public confidence in the activities of VIO personnel.

He charged the new VIO chief to consolidate on the reforms already initiated by government, stressing that his appointment followed due process in line with the civil service scheme and was not intended as a witch-hunt of any individual.
The commissioner also received the report of the committee set up to investigate the activities of VIOs in Jos, assuring that its recommendations would not be ignored but carefully reviewed and implemented.
According to him, the government is determined to ensure that officers carry out their duties with professionalism and respect for the public, while also urging residents to cooperate with VIO officials in the discharge of their lawful responsibilities.
The committee, which was constituted weeks ago in response to public outcry over alleged sharp practices by some VIO personnel, had invited members of the public to submit complaints and testify on their experiences.
Findings presented in the report highlighted challenges affecting the effectiveness of the agency, including inadequate manpower, the presence of undocumented officers, and the pressure of unofficial revenue targets, which were said to contribute to unprofessional conduct.
The government said it expects that the recommendations of the committee will complement ongoing reforms in the transport sector and improve service delivery across the state.
